With increasing concern about the irreversible effects of climate change and the need for a secure energy supply, Eneco is making a major commitment to developing renewable energy; with wind playing a major part.

Here are some of the reasons why:

  • The UK has adopted ambitious renewable energy targets in order to combat the impacts of climate change and reduce reliance on overseas energy supplies. The Climate Change Act of 2008 commits the UK to an 80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To achieve such cuts, we need to invest in renewable energy generation such as wind power

  • Wind power is both clean and safe and does not contribute to global warming. Many other forms of electricity generation (fossil fuels) use or emit harmful substances

  • It is already a large-scale, reliable source of power in the UK – it now provides enough electricity to supply 2.5 million homes every year (source RenewableUK)

  • Wind is abundant and reliable and can be generated on land and at sea. The UK is the windiest country in Europe with around 40% of Europe’s wind energy resource (Source: RenewableUK)
  • The wind is free compared with rising fossil fuel prices and the potential difficulties associated with fuel availability. Wind energy is projected to be the cheapest form of electricity by 2020. (Source: Sustainable Development Commission)

  • At the end of the operational life of a wind park, it is easy to decommission the installation and return the land to its previous use

  • Wind energy is one of the most popular energy technologies with opinion surveys regularly showing that just over 80% of people are in favour of wind energy, and less than 10% are against it. In fact those who live closest to wind parks are more supportive than people across the rest of the country.
